Bartın and Kurucaşile are a region that has left its mark on the last 3000 years of wooden boat construction with a history of approximately 4500 years. The most powerful times were the periods when the Ottoman Fleet produced its galleys, starting from the period of Mehmet the Conqueror. They still continue to produce with the same unique principles, without losing any of their importance, feature or meaning, even though they are not in their former power.
Approximately 20 masters in 20 workshops continue the handmade boats profession, which they inherited from their fathers, with the same principles and dignity. The profession forms a family tree that passes from father to son or from master to apprentice. It is as if the generations who left the profession inherited to each other, they also bequeath the characters that are hospitable, extremely respectful and full with human love. No matter how many masters you talk to, you are greeted with the same respectful, loving, helpful and hospitable attitude and a smiling face. It feels as if you have lived there for years, rather than a stranger.
As soon as we heard about the story of this Anatolian heritage, we were very impressed and could not prevent our desire to leave a document in history by photographing it. We thought that maybe we would both contribute to the announcement of these handcrafted works of art, as well as provide strong economic support and support for the growth and development of the sector.
The photos were taken at six separate workshops in Kurucaşile and Tekkeönü.
