Felt; obtained by wrapping sheep, lam bor goat hair, pressing or pounding strongly. It is defined as the non – woven coarse fabric used in the production of shepher’s felt cloak, tents, sandals and floor coverings. Felt is the oldest known textile on earth.

Shepherd’s felt cloak (kepenek) is the clothes used by shepherd due to its providing coolness in hot weather, warming in cold weather and its waterproof feature. However, today, there are very few masters working in felt making and new generation masters are not trained, so the production of shepherd’s felt cloak has decreased a lot.

The aim of this project is to document the production of felt and shepherd’s felt cloak with classical methods, which is a cultural heritage that is about to disappear, with the visuality of the art of photography and to leave a clue to future generations.

This project was completed in over a year. It was created from photographs taken during various visits to a village in Kütahya engaged in raising sheep and felt workers operating in Afyon, Tire and Ödemiş.
