In every period of history, Izmir and its surroundings have always been a city that determines and preserves its own cultural language and history. We come across the first photographic documents about Izmir, photographs taken by Goupil Fesquet in 1840. Later, it was photographed until the establishment of the Republic of Turkey by many foreign photographers. With these photographs, the visual memory of İzmir and its surroundings has started to form. Photographs produced by photographers who contribute to this visual memory also show us what kind of cultural structure existed in the last period of the Ottoman Empire. In the process until the proclamation of the Republic and in the photographs taken until today, the change of the urban culture is also seen in the photographs of Izmir.

We can blame the First World War, which took place as a result of international politics and balances, for this change. The emergence of a society that has come to the brink of extinction or existence again from the ashes and the destruction of a city like Izmir, which has risen above its history, and its revival with the Republic is not an understatement.

This series focuses on the city history of Izmir and re-evaluates the old Izmir photographs that have been visually memorized today, and the cultural, political, economic contribution of the effects to the change of the city is emphasized.
