'Asklepion' Where Death Can’t Enter
Asclepion is a name given to the blessed centers that used to treat people dedicated to the son of Apollo and the god of health Asclepius.
The Pergamon Asclepion, the world's best and most versatile hospital during the Hellenistic and Roman Empire periods, was built in BC 4th century.It was built in the district of Bergama in Izmir in the and has been one of the most important treatment centers of the ancient age for the patients from various parts of the world for 900 years. Asklepion is also a medical school where famous physicians of the period were trained and a center that known in history as the world's first psychiatric hospital.
In the blessed area of Asclepion; there is a yard with a gallery, a 3500-seat theater, a cult hall belonging to Emperor Hadrianus, a library, a circular planned Asklepios Temple, sleeping rooms, holy spring and pools. The entrance to Asklepion during the Roman period was made through the arched door, which has only a short wall today and is called the Viran Gate by the people. At the entrance of the Via Tecta (Blessed Way) it was written "Death is Forbidden to Enter Asclepion for the Blessing of All Gods.
